Lil JJ’s Almost Grown Variety Show Review

This kid is so talented! The way this show was put together, the artist, and Little JJ himself wasn’t anything short of spectacular. I had seen him in two movies, but had no idea he was so talented. I’d recommend this to anyone, children or adult.

Carl Nielsen – Maskarade (Royal Danish Opera)

Carl Nielsen – Maskarade (Royal Danish Opera) Review

This set seems to have divided opinions not on the quality of the opera and the performance – which are superb – but on the filming of Nielsen’s delightful and charming Maskarade.

I totally side with J. Scott Morrison in his enthusiastic response to this DVD, filming and all. The frequent camera movement didn’t bother me in the least. It was not disconcerting and didn’t intrude upon my enjoyment of this wonderful Danish treat a bit. If anything, I think the camera changes enhance the rambunctious comedy on stage. In fact, the filming quite outstandingly seems to focus on the right thing at the right time with great regularity, no small feat with what the video director has attempted.

I found it charming to observe the occasional smiling instrumentalist obviously delighting in what was taking place on stage, and seeing frequent glimpses of conductor Michael Schonwandt mouthing every word to the opera (he claims to have memorized it soon after he first saw it at age 10!). And to see the interaction at the end of the opera brought a lump to the throat. I won’t spoil what happens, but the ending, and in fact, much of the opera, are, as in the best of Nielsen’s music, life affirming. It brings tears of joy.

Maskarade has knockabout comic similarities to the Marriage of Figaro and Falstaff, and Nielsen’s voice, if early in his maturity (the Third, Fourth and Fifth Symphonies were to come a bit later) is distinctive. The young cast enters fully into the spirit and vocal demands of the piece. Some highlights include the orchestra music (overture, Act 3 dances), Magdelone’s cheeky Act 1 dance scene and folie d’espagne, the magnificent quintet to end Act 1, the touching unmasking in Act 2 and the riotous show within a show in Act 3 (with a jolt of spark and fun similar to the show within a show in Die Fledermaus and Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream).

I am usually not fond of updating scenarios to operas, but this one works splendidly. The color, fun and creativity are most impressive. Kaspar Bech Holten’s direction is to be commended.

This is Denmark’s national opera, and was premiered in 1906 but amazingly, didn’t get performed outside of Scandinavia until 1972 in Minnesota!

There is also apparently a Saul and David from this source, which I highly look forward to.

This production and filming are totally a delight. An easy 5 stars.

America in Concert: Live at the Sydney Opera House

America in Concert: Live at the Sydney Opera House Review

This is a very good DVD for any rock or soft rock fan. I saw them this year at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada. Great show. They had a very similar set as with the DVD which is a few years ago. If you like the Mama’s and Papa’s song California Dreamin, then you’ll love America singing this song as a usual part of their tours. A good band, with songs that you would never tire of hearing over these many years.

Journey – Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 – Music Videos & Live Performances

Journey – Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 – Music Videos & Live Performances Review

Extremely happy with my recent purchase and lightening speed delivery of my order. I would not hesitate to order other merchadise, I am VERY HAPPY. I will highly recommend your service and products to others. JIM

Journey – Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 – Music Videos & Live Performances Feature

Journey – Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 – Music Videos & Live Performances Overview

It will be many years before Journey’s music will be known as anything but soupy ’70s arena rock and embarrassingly overwrought ’80s pop. But that day will come: the songs and the playing are just too good for the scorn and ridicule to endure forever. Journey: Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 will do little, however, to hasten the band’s salvation. In fact, if it weren’t such a gift to those who love the music, a case could be made for suppressing the disc’s video content, so unimaginative is most of the directing and so damning is the attire (or lack thereof).

But even if sweaty guys running around in tight jeans and no underwear isn’t really your thing, the disc has its treats. There’s MTV nostalgia, pure and simple–”Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” with its mimed quayside performance and strutting high-heeled model, is perhaps the quintessential “What were they thinking?” video. We also get exciting glimpses of the early band (with keyboardist Gregg Rolie passing the lead-vocal torch to newcomer Steve Perry) kicking out classics like “Feeling That Way,” “Lights,” and “Just the Same Way.” Many of the songs feature live audio as well as video, and it’s here, most notably in “Who’s Crying Now” and “Stone in Love,” that lead guitarist Neal Schon cuts loose with some extended licks. An unexpected pleasure is 1996’s heartfelt ballad “When You Love a Woman.” The guys are aging gracefully, Steve Smith’s drumming is better than ever, and the video itself boasts the most tasteful production of the bunch. –Michael Mikesell

U2 – Rattle & Hum [Blu-ray]

U2 – Rattle & Hum [Blu-ray] Review

This one has been reviewed extensively, so I’ll just mention a few things. This dvd is packed with 26 songs. You get a guest performance with the legendary B.B.King. You get to see the U2 members visiting Graceland & hanging out in Memphis. The last time I was in Memphis, at the Sun Records Studio, they had a gold record of this album hanging on the wall. It was presented to them by U2, in appreciation for the hospitality they received from the Sun Studio and Memphis. You get some great scenes from Memphis in this dvd. This is a good dvd, and I recommend it!!!! Thanks, and may God Bless!!!

U2 – Rattle & Hum [Blu-ray] Overview

Bluray Disc

U2 – Rattle & Hum [Blu-ray] Specifications

Rattle and Hum is not a film for anyone looking for an introduction to Irish band U2’s career in the 1980s, but it is a vibrant portrait of an established group making its musical pilgrimage through the America it has always imagined through blues, gospel, and early rock ‘n’ roll. Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven’s Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kinetic Three O’Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and B.B. King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” to exorcise Charles Manson’s sick claim on the song. –Tom Keogh
